Monitoring resembles continuous collection of data and processing it. The watershed monitoring is one of such activity which requires to record adequate changes in the area. High resolution satellite imagery with its frequent temporal revisits permits close monitoring of special areas of interest at greater detail. Extracting the information of development activities and impacts associated to those development activities are made easy using HRS data. Monitoring of watershed at national level projects like Integrated Watershed Management Programme (IWMP) is a herculean task which involves cloud free data acquisition of multispectral and panchromatic images of particular time period.

There are a total of 52500 micro watersheds belonging to 28 states of the country, And for monitoring all these micro watersheds data is obtained from IRS PS4 LISS4 and Cartosat 1 PAN. The data acquisition is done with reference to the feasibility matrix generated according to seasons of particular time period. QGIS with it unique capabilities and series of steps can ensure the perfect scene selection corresponding to the watershed project. This paper mainly deals with complexities in handling and selecting the large scale datasets and comparing the area utilized for monitoring the watershed in terms of scene to area ratio.
