2014 statistics indicate that 41.8 million metric tons of E-waste is generated globally per annum, which is becoming a great concern in today’s world. In the process of E-waste management, attention needs to be paid towards collection and transportation which itself requires 60-70% of the total cost. Hence there is a need for mapping the origin of such wastes, suitable sites to dispose them and determination of optimal routes to transport to disposal sites.
This abstract presents a work carried out using OS Data and OS software (QGIS) to identify optimal routes for transportation of e-waste generated in Chennai city to the suitable sites in Thiruvallur and Kancheepuram districts, south India, identified using ArcGIS.
To accomplish the task the following steps were involved:
Data conversion from ArcGIS (proprietary) to QGIS(open source), mainly pertaining to data and maps of the suitable disposal sites in Kanchipuram and Thiruvallur districts.
Location of e-waste generating sites in Chennai city in QGIS
Extraction of road network in QGIS using open street map layers (open source data).
Determining the various cost factors for optimal route selection
Route optimization using pgRouting module in QGIS.
Thus, the highlight of this study is the effective application of an optimal routing model to achieve the minimum cost/distance/time efficient collection and transport path for e-waste management. This was achieved by linking a proprietary GIS (ArcGIS) and an open source GIS (QGIS) in conjunction with freely available satellite image data (Landsat OLI data) and road networks from Open Street Maps.
